A Dunn County Sheriff’s Office deputy came across an abandoned dog on the side of the road near Menomonie, Wisconsin, in November 2019. He was alarmed at how emaciated the pooch was and immediately brought him to the Dunn County Humane Society for treatment.
The deputy had every right to be worried; Gabriel, as the canine was named, weighed only 23.5 pounds. Dogs his size are supposed to weigh anywhere between 60 and 70 pounds.
Jamie Wagner, a kennel manager at the Humane Society, observed that when he arrived, Gabriel had trouble breathing. Also, the canine could neither stand nor walk properly.
Other signs, such as the dog’s smell and the absence of burrs and ticks on his fur, suggested the possibility that Gabriel came from a hoarding situation. Thankfully, his former owner has since been identified and arrested.
As soon as dog lovers learned of Gabriel and the traumatic situation he went through, the Dunn County Humane Society received hundreds of applications for the canine. However, it took some time before the shelter deemed the pooch suitable for adoption.
First, they had to help him get his strength back up. Given how extremely malnourished Gabriel was, the shelter employees had to take the slow and steady route so as not to upset his stomach.
As he got healthier, Gabriel revealed himself to be an affectionate, playful, and friendly pooch. Because of these qualities, he quickly became the darling of the Humane Society.
Around Christmas, the dog went to a foster family so he could get ready for his forever home. Fortunately, after just a few weeks of looking after Gabriel, the Chans fell in love and decided to adopt him formally.
Moreover, they decided to keep his name. Henry Chan, his fur dad, says the name fits him perfectly — Gabriel means “God is my strength.”
Today, the canine has several acres of farmland where he could run and play as much as wants, free as a bird. His new family spoils him with love and treats, and Henry says it’s as if they’d known each other for years. Watch Gabriel before his adoption in the video below:
